Caregiver
FRENCHTOWN CENTER FOR ACTIVE ADULTS IN PARTNERSHIP WITH THE ALZHEIMER'S ASSOCIATION:
A NEW CAREGIVERS SUPPORT GROUP
2nd MONDAY OF EACH MONTH AT 1:00PM
As caregivers, we are often physically, mentally, and emotionally overwhelmed. It can be a long, isolating, and very lonely journey. We will provide an open, safe place to share your struggles and find resources to ease your burden. You don’t have to feel alone in this journey. Open to all who are currently caring for a loved one with dementia, Alzheimer’s, or caring for someone with a long-term illness.
You can read our monthly newsletter and see our calendar for meeting dates. This group provides quality information, support, and resources for family caregivers of adults with chronic physical or cognitive conditions such as Alzheimer’s, stroke, Parkinson’s, and other illnesses.
Helping Caregivers through Education
The Area Agency on Aging 1B provides a series of educational opportunities for Caregivers. One of those programs is Powerful Tools for Caregivers, designed to help family caregivers in southeast Michigan and metro Detroit take care of themselves while caring for an aging or disabled relative or friend.
In partnership with the Area Agency on Aging 1B, the Frenchtown Center for Active Adults has offered this program. Classes meet once a week for 6 weeks. Each class lasts 1 hour and 30 minutes. While the caregiver attends classes, the loved one benefits from the Adult Day Services program. Even though the program is always available for a visit, the class offers a wonderful opportunity for both the caregiver and their loved one to experience it firsthand.
Here is just a few of the tools the class provides, and the caregiver can use right away.
- Reduce stress and take care of yourself
- Communicate your feelings, needs and concerns
- Get through challenging situations
- Make tough decisions
